Sri Sri Auniati Satra - The Spiritual Beacon Of Majuli, Assam

Located in the serene river island of Majuli in Assam, Sri Sri Auniati Satra is one of the most prestigious and historically significant Vaishnavite monasteries in the region. Established in 1653 AD by Ahom King Jayaddhaja Singha (earlier known as Sultanla before embracing Vaishnavism), this sacred institution continues to be a center of Assamese spiritual and cultural life.
The Satra was founded under the spiritual guidance of Sri Sri Niranjan Deva, the first Satradhikar. The name “Auniati” is derived from the Assamese words Auni (a type of betel creeper) and Ati (an elevated place), reflecting its geographical location on slightly raised land surrounded by betel plants.
For over 350 years, daily prayers and religious practices have been conducted without interruption. The Naam-Kirtan (chanting), devotional dances, and rituals performed here are expressions of deep devotion to Lord Krishna (Govinda). The Satra also plays a central role in preserving Satriya Nritya, a classical dance form of Assam recognized by the Sangeet Natak Akademi.
Festivals celebrated at Auniati Satra include:
Paal Naam (a major spiritual congregation in the month of Kartik)
Raas Leela, Janmashtami, Holi, Diwali
Bohag Bihu (Assamese New Year)
Death anniversaries of past Satradhikars and Vaishnavite saints
The Satra is a cultural powerhouse, presenting dance forms like Natua, Apsara, Krishna Gopi Nritya, Jumura, Maati Akhara, and devotional performances like Oza-Pali and Gayan-Bayan. Music here includes sacred compositions like Naam, Ghosha Mangal, Raas Geet, Guru Bandana, and more, all rooted in the teachings of the Bhakti movement.
