Currently serving as the Dean of Admissions and Outreach at O P Jindal Global University in Sonipat, Dr Mahanta has an extensive academic background. She studied at Delhi University and Jawaharlal Nehru University, and was also a fellow at the University of British Columbia in Canada. Earlier in her career, she worked as a faculty member at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences in Mumbai, focusing on law, gender, and social justice.
The SHEAC council plays a key role in shaping how Cambridge qualifications are recognised globally and ensures they remain aligned with the evolving landscape of international higher education. Dr Mahanta's appointment marks a significant milestone, not only for Indian academia but also for scholars from Assam and the North East region.
She is the daughter of late Professor Sarat Mahanta and Mina Mahanta, and belongs to a distinguished family that includes Dr Partha Sarathi Mahanta and Dr Sabyasachi Mahanta. Her achievement reflects the growing global presence of Indian scholars and brings valuable representation from the Global South into international education policy discussions.
