Who Wanted To Marry Maa Kamakhya?

In Assamese mythology, one of the most fascinating stories connected with the Kamakhya Temple revolves around the question – who wanted to marry Goddess Kamakhya? According to ancient legends, it was King Narakasura, the powerful ruler of Pragjyotishpur (modern-day Guwahati), who deeply desired to marry the goddess.

The story narrates that Narakasura was captivated by the divine beauty of Maa Kamakhya, a powerful form of Goddess Shakti. Determined to win her hand, he approached her with a marriage proposal. Maa Kamakhya, unwilling to accept him directly, set a condition: Narakasura must build a grand staircase from the bottom of Nilachal Hill to her temple, and it had to be completed before dawn.

Narakasura accepted the challenge and began constructing the staircase overnight. The steps, still visible today and known as the Madan Kamdev or Kamakhya stairway, reached near completion when the goddess cleverly tricked him. She made a rooster crow before sunrise, making Narakasura believe dawn had arrived. Realizing he had failed, Narakasura abandoned the task, and the marriage never took place.

This legend highlights not only the mythological significance of Maa Kamakhya but also the cultural heritage of Assam, where the temple stands as one of the most sacred Shakti Peethas in India. The story of Narakasura’s unfulfilled wish to marry the goddess continues to be a celebrated part of Assamese folklore.
