What Is Pora Amlakhi In Assam And Why Is It Considered Healthy?

Pora Amlakhi (পৰা আমলখি) or Poramlokhi, Pamalkhi, or Holfoli is the Assamese name for Phyllanthus acidus, a popular traditional food in Assam, refers to roasted Amlakhi or Indian Gooseberry (Emblica officinalis). In Assamese households, this simple yet powerful preparation is not just eaten as a tangy side dish but also regarded as a natural home remedy for several health issues. It is a plant found in Assam, and its mature fruits are acidic and can be eaten fresh or used in pickles. It is sometimes referred to as "Starberry" in English. Although the fruit of this plant is yellow in color and called "Pora Amlokhi," its taste is different from that of the regular amla (Indian gooseberry).

The preparation is simple—fresh amlakhi fruits are roasted until slightly charred, releasing a smoky flavor that enhances their medicinal properties. People often consume Pora Amlakhi with a pinch of salt, mustard oil, or black pepper.

In Assamese culture, Pora Amlakhi is highly valued for its health benefits. It is believed to:

1) Improve digestion and reduce acidity

2) Boost immunity due to its high Vitamin C content

3) Purify blood and improve skin health

4) Relieve cough and cold naturally

Because of these qualities, Pora Amlakhi is a part of Assamese folk medicine and continues to be consumed by many families as a daily wellness food.

Thus, Pora Amlakhi is more than just a roasted fruit—it is a time-tested Assamese remedy that connects food, health, and tradition.
