The Mising tribe, one of the major indigenous communities of Assam, was historically known as the Miri tribe. The name “Miri” appears in ancient Assamese chronicles, Ahom Buranjis, and colonial records, referring to this Tibeto-Burman ethnic group.
The word Miri is believed to have originated from the Tani language family, where it meant “the mediator” or “the middle people,” possibly reflecting their role as a link between the plains and the hills. Historically, the Mising people lived in the hills of present-day Arunachal Pradesh before gradually migrating to the riverine plains of Assam, especially along the banks of the Brahmaputra.
Over time, the community adopted the name Mising, which they identify with today, moving away from the colonial-era term “Miri” that many considered outdated and imposed. The Misings have preserved a rich cultural heritage, including their Ali-Aye-Ligang festival, vibrant folk music, and traditional weaving.
The shift from “Miri” to “Mising” is not just a change in name but also a statement of cultural identity and self-recognition, symbolizing the community’s pride in its heritage and autonomy.
