The first college in Assam is Cotton College, established in the year 1901 during the British colonial period. Founded by Sir Henry Stedman Cotton, the then Chief Commissioner of Assam, the college was created to provide higher education opportunities to the people of the region.
Cotton College started with just 39 students and a few teaching staff, but it quickly became the center of academic excellence in Northeast India. It initially offered courses under Calcutta University before affiliating with Gauhati University after its establishment in 1948.
Over the decades, Cotton College produced many notable scholars, leaders, and professionals who contributed significantly to Assam’s cultural, political, and educational growth. In 2011, it was upgraded to Cotton University, further expanding its role in modern higher education.
Today, Cotton University remains a symbol of Assam’s academic heritage and continues to be a leading institution for arts, science, and commerce education in the state.
