In Assam’s traditional caste hierarchy, the Brahmins have historically been regarded as the caste with the highest social status. Originating from ancient Hindu societal structures, Assamese Brahmins were traditionally associated with priesthood, religious rituals, Sanskrit scholarship, and spiritual leadership.
Other communities such as the Kayasthas and certain Ahom aristocratic lineages also held significant influence in politics, land ownership, and administration. However, in terms of ritual status and religious prestige, Brahmins have long been placed at the top of the social order.
It is important to note that in modern Assam, caste-based distinctions have reduced in day-to-day life, with education, profession, and economic position playing a larger role in social standing. Still, the cultural perception of Brahmins as the traditionally “highest” caste remains part of Assam’s historical identity.
