Miya Poetry is a literary and cultural movement that emerged in Assam in the 2010s, primarily led by poets from the Bengali-origin Muslim community often referred to as “Miya.” Written in Assamese or local dialects, these poems speak about themes of identity, discrimination, migration, poverty, and the struggle for dignity.
The movement began as a way for the community to reclaim the word “Miya,” which had been used pejoratively in political and social contexts. Through verse, Miya poets challenge stereotypes, narrate their lived experiences, and assert their belonging to Assam.
While celebrated for giving a voice to marginalized narratives, Miya Poetry has also faced criticism from some political and cultural groups who claim it could deepen identity divides. Nevertheless, it remains a powerful form of resistance literature—blending personal stories with broader social and political commentary.
