The first Election Commissioner of India from Assam was Harishankar Brahma, a distinguished civil servant and respected bureaucrat.
He also became the second person from North-East India to hold this prestigious constitutional post.
A 1975 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Andhra Pradesh cadre, Harishankar Brahma held several key positions in both the state and central governments. He was appointed as Election Commissioner of India in 2010 and later took charge as the Chief Election Commissioner of India in January 2015.
