The Treaty of Ghilajhari Ghat was a historic peace agreement signed in 1663 between the Ahom Kingdom and the Mughal Empire, led by the Mughal general Mir Jumla. This treaty was concluded after the Mughal invasion of Assam during the reign of Ahom king Jayadhwaj Singha.
Key points of the treaty included:
-
The Ahoms had to cede Guwahati and adjoining territories to the Mughals.
-
The Ahom king agreed to send an annual tribute to the Mughal court.
-
Several hostages, including royal family members, were taken to ensure compliance.
While the treaty temporarily ended hostilities, it also marked a period of Mughal dominance in parts of Assam until the Ahoms reclaimed their territory in later battles, most notably the Battle of Saraighat in 1671.
The Treaty of Ghilajhari Ghat remains a significant episode in Assam’s history, symbolizing both the challenges and resilience of the Ahom dynasty.
