Srimanta Sankardev first met Madhavdev at Dhuwahat, in present-day Nagaon district of Assam, during the 16th century. At the time, Madhavdev was a devoted follower of the Shakta faith, while Sankardev was spreading the ideals of Ek Saran Naam Dharma, a monotheistic Vaishnavite movement centered on devotion to Lord Krishna.
The meeting happened when Madhavdev engaged in a religious discussion with Sankardev’s disciple, Ramrai. Deeply moved by Sankardev’s profound wisdom, humility, and spiritual philosophy, Madhavdev decided to accept him as his Guru. This marked the beginning of a lifelong Guru-disciple relationship, with Madhavdev emerging as Sankardev’s most dedicated follower and a major figure in propagating the Vaishnavite faith across Assam.
