Who Is The Founding Father Of Mobile Theatre In Assam?

The founding father of modern mobile theatre in Assam is Achyut Lahkar. He pioneered the mobile theatre movement in 1963 by establishing Natraj Theatre, the first fully organized, professionally managed Bhramyaman (mobile) theatre group in Assam.

While earlier efforts—like Brajanath Sarma’s Kohinoor Opera in the 1930s—introduced the idea of traveling drama, it was Achyut Lahkar who transformed this idea into a full-fledged cultural industry. He brought in professional lighting, sound, stagecraft, large tents, and storytelling that combined traditional Assamese themes with contemporary social issues.

Under Lahkar’s leadership, mobile theatre became accessible to every corner of Assam, even in the most remote villages. It offered entertainment, cultural education, and a sense of unity to lakhs of people, season after season.

Today, mobile theatre is a multi-crore seasonal industry in Assam, with actors, technicians, and directors working together in a uniquely Assamese form of entertainment. The entire legacy owes its growth and structure to Achyut Lahkar, the true father of modern Assamese mobile theatre.
