What Is The Other Name Of Assam?

The state of Assam is not only rich in biodiversity and culture but also in history. In ancient times, the region we now call Assam was known by various names, the most prominent being "Kamarupa" or "Kamrup."

Other Traditional Names of Assam:

  1. Pragjyotisha:

    • Mentioned in ancient scriptures like the Mahabharata and Kalika Purana.

    • It means "City of Eastern Lights" and is considered a powerful ancient kingdom.

  2. Asama / Asam:

    • A transitional form that evolved from the Ahom period.

    • Later became "Assam" under British and Mughal influence.

  3. Ahom Desh:
