The first queen to directly govern the Ahom Kingdom was Phuleswari Devi, also known as Pramatheswari Devi. She made history in 18th-century Assam by assuming royal authority and ruling as the de facto monarch.
She was the chief consort of King Siva Singha, who ruled from 1714 to 1744. Phuleswari assumed the title "Bar Raja" (Great King) and governed the kingdom on behalf of her husband, who was advised to delegate power due to astrological predictions.
Rise to Power:
-
Phuleswari Devi was the chief queen of Swargadeo Siva Singha, one of the most influential Ahom kings.
-
As Siva Singha turned deeply religious and withdrew from active politics, he entrusted Phuleswari with full administrative control.
-
She was given the title Bor Raja (meaning “Great King”), symbolizing her sovereign authority.
