Jonbeel Mela is celebrated at Dayang Belguri, near Jagiroad town in the Morigaon district of Assam, India. This vibrant and historic festival takes place at the foothills of the Jonbeel (moon-shaped) wetland, from which it derives its name.
What Makes Jonbeel Mela Unique?
-
The mela is known for its barter system — where people exchange goods without money.
-
Tribal communities such as the Tiwas, Karbis, Khasi, and Jayantia descend from the hills and exchange products like ginger, garlic, wild vegetables, and livestock with plains people offering rice, fish, salt, and more.
-
It is one of the only surviving barter fairs in modern India.
