The Posa system was introduced in Assam during the rule of the Ahom kings, primarily under the reign of King Pratap Singha (1603–1641 AD). It was implemented as a military and revenue-sharing system to maintain the frontier regions of the kingdom, particularly in areas inhabited by tribal and hill communities.
What Was the Posa System?
-
The Posa system allowed hill chiefs and frontier tribes (such as the Nagas, Kukis, Daflas, etc.) to receive fixed grants (posa) — usually in kind (like rice, cattle, or labor) — from local Assamese peasants or villages.
-
In return, these tribal chiefs provided military assistance and guarded the borders of the Ahom kingdom.
-
It was a mutual arrangement to maintain peace and defense in strategically sensitive zones.
