The Paik system, a unique socio-administrative and military organization, played a pivotal role in the success and expansion of the Ahom kingdom in Assam. While its origin is credited to King Suhungmung (Dihingia Raja) in the early 16th century, the system was later formalized and effectively implemented by Momai Tamuli Barbarua under the leadership of King Pratap Singha in 1609 AD.
Understanding the Paik System:
-
Every able-bodied male subject was registered as a Paik — a laborer and part-time soldier.
-
Paiks were grouped in units called “Gots” (usually four men), serving the state in rotation.
-
Duties included military service, construction, agriculture, policing, and more.
