The first Ahom king to formally adopt Hinduism was Suhungmung, popularly known as Dihingia Raja. He ruled the Ahom kingdom from 1497 to 1539 AD and is remembered for initiating a major cultural and religious shift within the dynasty.
Suhungmung took the Hindu name Swarganarayan, reflecting his growing alignment with Hindu practices. His reign marked the beginning of the Hinduisation of the Ahom court, blending traditional Tai-Ahom beliefs with Hindu customs. This was a strategic and cultural move to unify the diverse ethnic and religious groups in the expanding Ahom kingdom.
