Which Ahom King Introduced Jonbeel Mela?

The historic Jonbeel Mela was introduced by Ahom King Pratap Singha, also known as Swargadeo Pratap Singha, who ruled from 1603 to 1641 AD. He initiated this unique fair to promote harmony and economic exchange among various indigenous communities of Assam, especially between the hill tribes and plains people.

Held near Jonbeel (moon-shaped waterbody) in Jagiroad, this fair is one of India's rare events where the ancient barter system is still practiced. Tribes from the hills descend with forest produce to trade with plain-dwellers for rice, salt, fish, and other items - all without using money.
