After India gained independence in 1947, Assam, like other states, began a new chapter in its governance. The first Governor of independent Assam was Sir Muhammad Saleh Akbar Hydari. He took office on 15 August 1947, playing a crucial role during the transition period of British India to independent India.
Sir Akbar Hydari was a distinguished civil servant and had earlier served as the Prime Minister of Hyderabad State. As the Governor of Assam, he worked towards stabilizing the administration and integrating the region into the newly formed Indian Union.
