Who Was Hiuen-tsang Or Hiuwen Chang?

Hiuen-Tsang, also spelled Hiuwen Chang, was a renowned Chinese Buddhist monk, scholar, and traveler who lived during the 7th century. Born in 600 A.D. in Luozhou, China (modern-day Henan province), he is best known for his pilgrimage to India to study original Buddhist scriptures and learn from Indian masters.

Motivated by contradictions he found in Buddhist texts, Hiuen-Tsang left China in 629 A.D. and traveled thousands of miles through Central Asia on foot. He arrived in India in 633 A.D., where he spent nearly 15 years, visiting major learning centers like Nalanda University, and kingdoms like Kamarupa (ancient Assam) under King Bhaskar Varman.
