The first Assamese to be appointed as a Cabinet Minister was Bijoy Chandra Bhagwati. He was elected to the Lok Sabha, lower house of the Parliament of India from the Tezpur Assam in 1957, 1962 and 1967.
He served as Deputy Minister in the Ministry of Works, Housing and Urban Development First Indira Gandhi ministry from 24 January 1966 to 13 March 1967. For an Assamese-origin Cabinet Minister, Bijoy Chandra Bhagwati is often credited as one of the earliest prominent figures from Assam to serve at the central level, though not in the first cabinet post-independence.
