Assam was first connected to the Indian rail network in 1881 with the establishment of the Assam Bengal Railway. The railway line initially linked Dibrugarh in Assam with Chittagong (now in Bangladesh).
However, the direct rail connection between Assam and the rest of India was fully integrated in 1950, after the partition of India, when new railway routes were developed to maintain connectivity via Indian territory.
This connection played a vital role in boosting trade, mobility, and development in the northeastern region.
