The first Assamese book to win the Sahitya Akademi Award was “Laaj”, a powerful novel written by Birendra Kumar Bhattacharya. He received the award in 1955, making it the earliest recognition for Assamese literature by the Sahitya Akademi.
The award highlighted the richness of Assamese language and storytelling, and set the tone for future literary excellence in Assam. Bhattacharya later went on to win the Jnanpith Award, further cementing his legacy in Indian literature.
