Falcon Festival Dima Hasao – Celebrating The Journey Of Amur Falcons In Assam.
The Falcon Festival in Dima Hasao district of Assam is a vibrant celebration that unites wildlife enthusiasts, conservationists, and travelers to honor the incredible journey of the Amur Falcon, a small migratory bird that travels thousands of kilometers from Siberia to South Africa. Every year, these magnificent raptors make a brief stopover at Umrangso, a serene town in Dima Hasao, where they roost near the Kopili Reservoir during their long migration.
To create awareness about their conservation and promote sustainable tourism, the Falcon Festival is organized annually by the Dima Hasao Autonomous Council in collaboration with Blue Hills Society, Wildlife Trust of India, and other local organizations. Since its inception in 2015, the festival has transformed from a small awareness campaign into a grand cultural and eco-tourism event that attracts visitors from across Northeast India.
The Amur Falcon (Falco amurensis) is a small raptor species known for one of the longest migration journeys in the bird world. These birds breed in Siberia and Northern China, fly across India, and migrate to Southern Africa for the winter. The Dima Hasao district serves as a vital resting and feeding site for these birds during their migration. Their synchronized arrival in late October and departure in early December turns Umrangso into a natural spectacle, as flocks numbering in the hundreds of thousands fill the sky.

In 2025, the festival will be held from 12th,13th & 14th December 2025, featuring a live performance by Hybrid Theory, a renowned Linkin Park tribute band.
Before conservation efforts began, many Amur Falcons were hunted for meat and sport. The Blue Hills Society, along with the Assam Forest Department, initiated awareness campaigns, community engagement, and conservation drives that successfully reduced hunting incidents. Today, Dima Hasao stands as a beacon of coexistence, where communities proudly protect their visiting winged guests.
