Life & Legacy
Early Life
Suchibrata Raichoudhury was born on 1 September 1929 in Panbazar, Guwahati, Assam. She was the eldest daughter of renowned freedom fighter, poet, and social reformer Ambikagiri Raichoudhury and Kaushalya Devi. Growing up in an intellectually vibrant and patriotic family greatly influenced her personality. From childhood, she displayed a remarkable interest in literature, music, and public service. She began writing poems, stories, and articles at a young age and actively participated in cultural and literary activities.
Education
She completed her primary education in Guwahati before studying at Panbazar Girls' High School. She passed the matriculation examination in 1945 and received the Pratibha Devi Award and Narayani Handique Award for academic excellence. She later completed her Intermediate and Bachelor's degree from Handique Girls' College, where she also became the founding General Secretary of the Students' Union. She enrolled at Gauhati University for higher studies in Economics but devoted herself to supporting her family through teaching and literary work.
Career in Public Service
Suchibrata Raichoudhury began her professional career as a teacher at Tarini Charan Girls' School in 1951. After successfully clearing the Assam Civil Service examination, she joined the Assam Civil Service in 1954, becoming the first woman ACS officer in Assam. She also became the state's first woman Judicial Magistrate, creating history for women in public administration.
During her long administrative career, she served in numerous important positions including Deputy Magistrate, Deputy Director of Panchayat, Chief Executive Officer of the Khadi and Village Industries Board, Sub-Divisional Officer, Secretary of the District Gazetteers, Deputy Director of Education, Director of Social Welfare, and senior officer in the Revenue Department. She retired from government service on 31 August 1989 after more than three decades of distinguished service.
Literary Career
Alongside her administrative responsibilities, Suchibrata Raichoudhury established herself as an accomplished Assamese writer, poet, dramatist, novelist, translator, and essayist. Her literary works reflected patriotism, human values, women's rights, and social responsibility. She believed that a person's identity should be defined by character rather than caste or surname and therefore preferred signing her works only as "Suchibrata."
She translated several internationally acclaimed literary and historical works into Assamese, making world literature accessible to Assamese readers. In 2001, she received the Sahitya Akademi Translation Award for her Assamese translation of Origin and Development of Vaishnavism, published as Vaishnav Dharmar Atiguri aru Bikash.

Suchibrata Raichoudhury dedicated a significant part of her life to social welfare. She established schools for underprivileged children, promoted women's entrepreneurship, founded Assam's first Working Women's Hostel, helped establish Kanya Mahavidyalaya in Guwahati, created rehabilitation centres for destitute women and children, launched anti-drug awareness initiatives, and founded "Aamar Ghar," one of Assam's earliest old-age homes.
