AIIMS Guwahati was established in May 2017 under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), with the foundation stone laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 26 May 2017. The institute began its operations from a temporary campus at Narakasur Hill in January 2021, welcoming its first batch of 50 MBBS students. The permanent campus in Changsari, Assam, became functional from March 2022, and the institute was formally inaugurated by PM Modi on 14 April 2023.
The sprawling AIIMS Guwahati campus spans approximately 189 acres in Changsari, Kamrup (Rural) district.
