The National Institute of Design, Assam—commonly referred to as NID Jorhat—is one of India's leading design education institutes, established under the aegis of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. Located in Tocklai, Jorhat, in the heart of upper Assam, NID Assam is part of the elite network of NIDs across the country.

 
The foundation stone of the Jorhat NID was laid on 19 February 2011, by then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The fund for the institute was allocated in February 2014. The Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Suresh Prabhu inaugurated the institute at Rajabari on 22 February 2019 via video telecast. NID Assam was set up to promote design education and innovation in Northeast India, and it has quickly risen to become a sought-after destination for aspiring designers from across the country.
 
Academic Programs at NID Assam

NID Assam currently offers a Bachelor of Design (B.Des) program, spanning four years. The curriculum focuses on nurturing creativity, practical skills, and design thinking, with specializations in:

Admissions to NID Assam

Admission to the Bachelor of Design (B.Des) program at NID Assam is conducted through the Design Aptitude Test (DAT) conducted by the National Institute of Design. The admission process includes:

  1. DAT Prelims – National-level entrance exam

  2. DAT Mains – Studio test and personal interview for shortlisted candidates

Eligibility requires a 10+2 qualification in any stream from a recognized board.

Bachelor of Design (B. Des)

This 4-year course is offered in three specializations after passing of the NID (Amendment Act) 2019 and INI status of NID Assam. This course has a total of 75 seats. Previously, a Graduate Diploma Programme (GDP) was offered.

The campus is located at Tocklai village. It is on the bank of local river namely Tocklai river. It is 8 km (5.0 mi) away from Jorhat Airport and 2.5 km (1.6 mi) from Jorhat Town railway station.
