Assam Election 2026 Schedule: Voting Date, Counting Date and Full Details

The Election Commission of India has announced the schedule for the Assam Assembly Election 2026. Voting for the 126-member legislative assembly will take place in a single phase on April 9, while vote counting and results will be declared on May 4. The election will determine the next government of Assam and is expected to see a competitive contest between major political parties including the BJP, Congress and AIUDF.

The Election Commission of India has officially announced the schedule for the Assam Legislative Assembly Election 2026. According to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, voting across the state will be conducted in a single phase on April 9, 2026 for all 126 assembly constituencies. The counting of votes will take place on May 4, 2026, when the official results will be declared.

The tenure of the current Assam Legislative Assembly is scheduled to end on May 20, 2026. The previous assembly elections in the state were held during March and April 2021.

Political Scenario in Assam

The 2026 assembly election in Assam is expected to be closely contested among major political parties. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma from the Bharatiya Janata Party is aiming for another term in office. The ruling National Democratic Alliance, consisting of the BJP, Asom Gana Parishad and United People's Party Liberal, secured a total of 75 seats in the 2021 elections, with the BJP winning 60 seats and emerging as the largest party.

On the other hand, the Indian National Congress is trying to strengthen its position in the state under the leadership of state Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi. The Congress has already announced two candidate lists for the upcoming election with a total of 65 nominees. The first list included 42 candidates such as Gaurav Gogoi from Jorhat, Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia from Nazira, and sitting MLAs Nandita Das from Hajo-Sualkuchi and Diganta Barman from Barkhetri.

The second list named 23 additional candidates including Abdul Khaleque, Rakibuddin Ahmed and Bipul Gogoi. Around 15 constituencies have been left for alliance partners under a seat-sharing arrangement.

Meanwhile, the All India United Democratic Front led by Badruddin Ajmal has released its first list of nine candidates and is expected to contest about 25 seats in the election. The Bharatiya Janata Party is yet to announce its official list of candidates.

With polling scheduled in a single phase, the Assam Election 2026 is expected to attract significant political attention as voters prepare to choose their representatives for the next legislative assembly.
