Sivadol, Sivasagar – The Tallest Shiva Temple In India

Located in the heart of Sivasagar, Assam, Sivadol (also spelled Shivdol) is a majestic temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Standing proudly on the banks of the historic Borpukhuri tank, this architectural marvel was built in 1734 AD by Bar Raja Ambika, the queen of Ahom king Swargadeo Siba Singha. The name 'Sivadol' is derived from Assamese, where ‘Dol’ means temple.
Regarded as the tallest Shiva temple in India, the Sivadol rises to a height of 104 feet (32 meters) with a base perimeter of 195 feet (59 meters). The temple is crowned with a stunning 8-foot high golden dome known as the ‘Kolosi’, symbolizing its spiritual magnificence.
The Sivadol temple complex also includes:
Bishnudol – dedicated to Lord Vishnu
Devidol – dedicated to Goddess Durga
These three temples form a sacred triad, making the complex one of the most revered pilgrimage destinations in Northeast India.
Sivadol stands on slightly elevated ground, making it visible from nearly all parts of Sivasagar town. The temple walls are intricately carved with sculpted figures of Hindu deities, mythical beings, and floral motifs, showcasing the artistic brilliance of Ahom architecture.
The Sivadol is not just a religious center—it is a symbol of Assamese pride and cultural heritage. Every year, it draws thousands of devotees and tourists, both domestic and international.
