Sri Sri Nityananda Than, Kathpar, Banmukh - A Tranquil Vaishnavite Shrine In Sivasagar

Sri Sri Nityananda Than, situated in the historic town of Sivasagar, is a revered Vaishnavite religious site that holds deep spiritual and cultural importance in Assam. Dedicated to Lord Nityananda, the spiritual companion of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and a key figure in the Bhakti movement, this Than (a term used in Assam for a spiritual institution) is a peaceful abode of prayer, meditation, and devotional practices.
Sri Sri Nityananda is associated with Budbari Xatra in Sivasagar, Assam. Specifically, the late Sri Sri Nityananda Mahanta Deva was the Xatradhikar (head) of this historic xatra, located on the banks of the Dikhow River in Nazira sub-division. The Budbari Xatra was established during the spiritual revival in Assam by Sri Sri Gopal Atta, a disciple of Srimanta Shankardeva. Sri Sri Nityananda Mahantadeva was the ninth generation Xatradhikar. He was also known as a social reformer and educationist in Sivasagar district. There is also a mention of a "Gurujana Than" in historic Kathpar, Banmukh, Sivasagar, where the 376th Tirubhav Tithi (commemoration of the day of divine manifestation) of Sri Sri Nityananda Dev was recently celebrated.
The Than is particularly lively during religious occasions and festivals that celebrate:
Janmashtami (birth of Lord Krishna)
Nityananda Jayanti (appearance day of Lord Nityananda)
Raasa Leela, Bhaona, and Naam-Kirtan sessions
Maghi Purnima, Bihu, and other community celebrations
These events witness vibrant participation, devotional singing, and traditional cultural performances that reflect Assam’s spiritual heritage.
