The temple is said to have been established during the Kachari Kingdom, though the current structure was built in 1962. The name "Burhi Ai Than" translates to "Shrine of the Old Mother."" According to legend, the site is dedicated to an ancient maternal goddess, believed to be a guardian spirit who has protected the land and its people for ages. Some believe she is an avatar of Goddess Durga or Kali, while others regard her as a local deity unique to Assam’s spiritual landscape.
The shrine's sanctity is maintained by strict local customs. It is said that those who attempt to desecrate the site or lie in front of the goddess suffer mysterious illnesses or misfortune. On the other hand, sincere devotees have shared stories of unexpected healing, justice served in complex disputes, and dreams where the goddess herself offered guidance.

One of the most important rituals associated with Burhi Ai Than is the annual festival observed during Durga Puja and Navratri. During this time, the shrine becomes a hub of spiritual activity, with hundreds of devotees lighting lamps, offering red cloths, coconuts, and sindoor (vermillion) to the deity.
