Up to the age of 12 all the knowledge I gained was through Gujarati, my mother tongue.
I knew then something of Arithmetic, History and Geography. Then I entered a High School. For the first three years the mother tongue was still the medium. But the schoolmaster's business was to drive English into the pupil's head. Therefore more than half of our time was given to learning English and mastering its arbitrary spelling and pronunciation. It was a painful discovery to have to learn a language that was not pronounced as it was written. It was a strange experience to have to learn the spelling by heart. For the first three years it was comparatively plain sailing.
The pillory began with the fourth year of my school. Geometry, Algebra, Chemistry, Astronomy, History and Geography--all were to be learnt in English. The tyranny of English was so great that even Sanskrit or Persian had to be learnt through English, not through the mother tongue. It did not matter to the teacher if a boy spoke bad English which he could neither pronounce correctly nor understand fully. Why should the teacher worry? His own English was by no means without blemish. The result was chaos. I know now why I took four years to learn of Arithmetic, Geometry, Algebra, Chemistry and Astronomy. If I had not to learn them through English but Gujarati, my grasp of the subjects would have been easier and clearer. My Gujarati vocabulary would have been richer. I would have made use of such knowledge in my own home. This English medium created an impassable barrier between me and the members of my family, who had not gone through English schools. I was fast becoming a stranger in my own home.
1. "His own English was by no means without blemish.” This means
A) the teacher made mistakes in English.– Correct
B) the students made mistakes in English.

2. The author says that if the medium of education was Gujarati instead of English, many things would happen. Which of the following claims is the author not making?
A) He would have learnt faster.
B) His Gujarati vocabulary would have been richer.
C) His English would have improved. – Correct
D) His dress would not have changed.
Explanation: The author mentions faster learning and richer Gujarati vocabulary, but does not claim that his English would have improved by using Gujarati as the medium.
3. Why was everything plain sailing during the first three years?
A) The schoolmaster was well-trained.
B) The medium of teaching was the mother tongue.– Correct
C) The syllabus was easy.
D) There were only a few subjects.
Explanation: The passage says the first three years used the mother tongue (Gujarati), making learning easier — hence “plain sailing.”
Read the following passage carefully and answer Question Nos. 4, 5 and 6 :
When vegetation sprouts in the desert, it is a good sign but when the ice in the Arctic and the Antarctic begins to turn green, there is something terribly wrong. Reports say that an iceberg, approximately the size of New York City, has broken off from the icy continent. An Argentine team discovered huge cracks in the polar ice caps. These developments can have serious implications. If polar ice fields melt, our coastal cities might be submerged and sea levels across the world could rise between 3·65 and 6.09 metres in different parts of the Earth. This is probably due to global warming.
4. What do you think is the intention of the author?

C) it means there is a combination of ice and zinc sulphate.
D) plants can thrive there.

The drama is presented in opera using the primary elements of theatre such as scenery, costumes and acting. However, the words of the opera or libretto are sung rather than spoken. The singers are accompanied by a musical ensemble ranging from a small instrumental ensemble to a full symphonic orchestra. It is a 400-year old genre. Artists are engaged in it all over the world. Composers, singers and directors have used this art form to tell stories. Italy is the birthplace of the opera.
