Renowned Assamese singer, music director, and cultural icon Zubeen Garg tragically passed away on Friday, September 19, 2025, in Singapore after suffering a seizure while swimming at Lazarus Island. His wife, Garima Saikia Garg, confirmed the heartbreaking incident.

Zubeen, one of the most celebrated voices of Assamese music and Indian cinema, was in Singapore to perform at the 4th North East India Festival at Suntec Convention Centre, where he was scheduled to perform on September 20, 2025. He had arrived on September 17 as the cultural brand ambassador for the prestigious event.

Circumstances of Zubeen Garg’s Death

According to family sources, Zubeen Garg went swimming with his team, including drummer Shekhar and musician Sidhartha, after reaching Lazarus Island on a yacht. Although all were wearing life jackets and returned safely, Zubeen re-entered the water, where he suddenly suffered a seizure attack.

His wife clarified that earlier reports of scuba diving accident were incorrect. Zubeen had a history of seizure-related health issues but had narrowly escaped danger in the past. This time, despite being rushed to the Singapore General Hospital ICU and receiving treatment for two hours, Zubeen Garg breathed his last at 2:30 PM.

National Leaders and Celebrities Pay Tribute

The news of Zubeen Garg’s untimely demise sent shockwaves across India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Bollywood actor from Assam Adil Hussain, and singer Jubin Nautiyal expressed their deep condolences.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described Zubeen as “one of Assam’s most beloved sons whose music touched millions”. He announced that Zubeen’s mortal remains would be brought back to India, first to Delhi and then to Guwahati. His body will be kept at Sarusajai Sports Complex for the public to pay their last respects.
