Kabonmili Timungpi (Khongmen) participated in the provincial elections to the Assam legislative assembly, contesting and winning the Shillong reserved seat, which was then part of Assam. She was subsequently elected as the Deputy Speaker of the Assembly, the first woman to serve in that position.
Her appointment was a landmark moment in Assam’s democratic journey, as she not only represented her constituency but also upheld the dignity of the House with integrity. At a time when women’s participation in politics was still limited, Kabonmili Timungpi Khongmen broke barriers and became a role model for future women leaders.
Today, she is remembered as a trailblazer who paved the way for greater women’s representation in Assam’s political and legislative institutions, making her name an integral part of the state’s history.
