The Makum coalfield, located in Tinsukia district of Upper Assam, is the largest coalfield in Assam. It is not only the biggest but also the most productive coal mining region in the state.
The Makum Coalfield is known for its high-quality bituminous coal. The Makum field has significant reserves, estimated at 452.79 million tonnes, with proven reserves of 305 million tonnes. The coal found in Makum is classified as high-volatile bituminous B/C, and it has excellent coking properties. The Tirap Colliery, one of the operating mines in the area, has been active since 1983 and is well-connected by road and rail.
