The Tiwa tribe, one of the prominent indigenous communities of Assam and parts of Meghalaya, is also known by the other name “Lalung.” This alternate name has historical roots and is still used in official records, older literature, and by certain communities in the region.
Historically, the term Lalung was more commonly used during the Ahom kingdom’s rule and in colonial records. Over time, the name Tiwa became the preferred term within the community, as it reflects their own cultural identity and linguistic heritage.
The Tiwa or Lalung people are known for their vibrant festivals like Wanshua and Langkhon, traditional weaving, and unique cuisine. Their settlements are mainly found in Morigaon, Nagaon, Kamrup (Assam), and Ri-Bhoi district (Meghalaya).
Using both names-Tiwa and Lalung-helps preserve the tribe’s historical connection while also honoring its evolving identity in modern times.
