Who Was The First Barrister Of Assam?

Historically, Assam’s first barrister was Anundoram Borooah, a distinguished scholar and administrator. Born in 1850 in Guwahati, Anundoram Borooah achieved the rare distinction of being the first Assamese to qualify as a barrister in Britain.

Apart from his legal expertise, he was a pioneering civil servant in the Indian Civil Service (ICS) and a respected Sanskrit scholar. His achievements inspired generations of Assamese youth to pursue higher education and public service, making him a prominent figure in Assam’s intellectual and legal history.
