The first Assamese woman to serve as a Union Minister in the Government of India was Renuka Devi Barkataki. She was appointed as the Union Minister of State for Education, Social Welfare, and Culture in 1977 under the Morarji Desai-led Janata Party government.
Renuka Devi Barkataki was elected as the Member of Parliament from the Gauhati (now Guwahati) Lok Sabha constituency and became a trailblazer for women in Assam’s political arena. Her appointment to the Union Cabinet was a historic moment that opened doors for female leadership in Northeast India.
