The first Assamese to serve as Governor in another Indian state was Dev Kant Barooah. He was appointed as the Governor of Bihar in 1971 and held the position until 1973.
Born in 1911 in Assam, Dev Kant Barooah was a distinguished politician, writer, and freedom fighter. Apart from his governorship, he also served as the President of the Indian National Congress during the Emergency period under Indira Gandhi. He is famously remembered for the slogan “India is Indira, Indira is India.”
As a literary figure, Barooah authored several works in Assamese and English, leaving behind a rich cultural and political legacy. His tenure as Governor of Bihar marked a significant milestone for Assam, proving the presence and capability of Assamese leaders in India’s federal governance.
