The oldest masjid (mosque) in Assam is the Panbari Masjid, located in the Dhubri district near the Assam-Bangladesh border. Believed to have been built during the reign of Mughal emperor Humayun in the early 16th century, the Panbari Masjid is not only the oldest Islamic structure in Assam but also one of the oldest in Eastern India.
The mosque is believed to have been built by Hussain Shah, the Governor of Bengal, between 1493 and 1519 AD
