The first Assamese grammar was written by Dr. Nathan Brown, an American Baptist missionary. His book, titled “Grammatical Notices of the Assamese Language”, was published in 1848.
Dr. Brown came to Assam in the 1830s and played a vital role in the revival and standardization of the Assamese language during British colonial rule, when Assamese was being suppressed in favor of Bengali. His grammar book provided a structured foundation for teaching and preserving the Assamese language.
