The first Namghar in Assam was established at Batadrava Than, in the Nagaon district, by Srimanta Sankardev in the 15th century.
Srimanta Sankardev, the saint-reformer and founder of the Ekasarana Naam Dharma, introduced the concept of the Namghar — a community prayer hall where people could gather to sing devotional songs (naam-prasanga) and listen to spiritual teachings. Batadrava Than became the birthplace of this cultural and religious movement, and the Namghar there is considered the oldest in Assam.
