The old name of Guwahati Airport was Borjhar Airport, named after the locality Borjhar, where the airport is located, approximately 26 kilometers from the city center of Guwahati, Assam.
Today, the airport is officially known as Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBI Airport). It was renamed in honor of Gopinath Bordoloi, the first Chief Minister of Assam and a prominent freedom fighter, recognizing his contribution to the state and the nation.
