Which Ahom King Started Durga Puja In Assam?

The first Ahom king to start Durga Puja in Assam was Swargadeo Rudra Singha, also known as Sukhrungphaa, who ruled from 1696 to 1714 AD. He introduced the grand celebration of Durga Puja as part of his efforts to promote Hindu religious practices and integrate Brahminical traditions into the Ahom royal court.

Origin of Durga Puja in Ahom Kingdom:

  • Rudra Singha, a visionary ruler, was greatly influenced by Hindu rituals and Vaishnavite culture.

  • He officially patronized Durga Puja and organized it with royal grandeur in his capital, Rangpur (present-day Sivasagar).

  • This marked a significant religious and cultural shift, as earlier Ahom rulers followed their own traditional Tai-Ahom beliefs.
