Who Was The First Prime Minister Of Assam?

The first Prime Minister of Assam was Sir Muhammad Saadulla. He served in this position during British rule, before India gained independence. The role of Prime Minister existed in the provinces under the Government of India Act, 1935, which introduced provincial autonomy.

  • Tenure as Prime Minister of Assam: First term began in 1937.

  • He was a member of the Assam Provincial Muslim League.

  • He is known for playing a key administrative role during a transformative period in Assam’s colonial history.

  • Saadulla was also a part of various governmental and legal reforms in pre-independent India.

After India’s independence in 1947, the term "Prime Minister of Assam" was replaced with "Chief Minister of Assam". The first Chief Minister of independent Assam was Gopinath Bordoloi.
