How Many Satras Are There In Majuli?

Majuli, the world’s largest river island located in the Brahmaputra River in Assam, is renowned for its rich Vaishnavite culture and heritage. The island is home to numerous Satras, which are monastic institutions established to promote the teachings of Srimanta Sankardeva, the 15th-century saint and founder of Neo-Vaishnavism in Assam.

Total Number of Satras:

There were originally 65 Satras in Majuli, but due to erosion and other environmental factors, only about 22 to 25 Satras are actively functioning today.
