The first railway junction in Assam was Dibrugarh, established in the late 19th century during British rule. It holds the distinction of being the gateway of rail transport in Northeast India and is one of the oldest railway hubs in the region.
The Assam Railway and Trading Company built a railway line from Dibrugarh to Makum in 1883, making Dibrugarh the starting point of Assam’s rail connectivity. Initially used to transport coal, tea, and oil, this junction played a major role in boosting trade and communication across Assam and the northeastern states.
