What Is Bordoichila?

Bordoichila, also spelled as Bordoisila, refers to the strong seasonal storm winds that blow across Assam during the pre-monsoon months of April and May. These powerful gusts are often accompanied by thunder, lightning, and sudden rainfalls, and are a prominent feature of Assam’s changing weather during the spring-to-summer transition.

In Assamese tradition, Bordoichila is not just a weather phenomenon — it is interwoven with local beliefs, songs, and folk tales. Its arrival is a natural marker for the Bohag Bihu (Rongali Bihu) festival, which celebrates the Assamese New Year and the arrival of spring.
