The Bodoland Territorial Area District (BTAD) was officially formed on February 10, 2003. It was established following the signing of the Bodo Accord between the Government of India, the Government of Assam, and the Bodo Liberation Tigers (BLT).
BTAD was created to provide autonomy and self-governance to the Bodo people within Assam under the framework of the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. It initially comprised four districts — Kokrajhar, Baksa, Chirang, and Udalguri — and was governed by the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC). This was a significant step in resolving long-standing ethnic and regional demands and remains a crucial chapter in Assam's political history.
